Appendix A: Character Building
II: Stats
Your stats define how good you are at something that
can't really be quantified or set into such pat little things as
numbers. Therefore, stats are just that, numbers. Their only purpose
here is to attempt to define who would 'win' if the players themselves
can't agree. There are three categories of stats, Physical, Mental,
and Other.
Physical
- Strength
- This is muscle. How much you can bench press, lift, or crush. This affects damage you can do with your bare hands.
- Flexibility
- This is how limber you are. This helps in fighting in close quarters, working in tight spaces or with small things, avoiding hits, or withstanding a blow that would normally break a bone or dislocate a joint.
- Endurance
- How long you can stay standing in a fight, how long you can withstand physically stressful predicaments, how long you can run or fight or swim or hold your breath.
- Speed
- Speed of movement. How fast you can run, how fast you can react, or dodge.
- Recovery
- How fast your body repairs damage. This also affects what sorts or wounds are considered deadly. The higher your recovery, the more atrocious of a wound you would be able to live through.
Mental
- Learning
- What you've learned through books or schooling. History, sciences, physics, or magic. Anything that must be taught, read about, or otherwise studied to impart.
- Reason
- The ability to reason. Logic, planning, predicting. You may not know as much as a learned person, but could probably 'figure it out.'
- Wisdom
- What you've learned through life-experience. An ability to understand people, predict what they'll do, or what could motivate them to do something. This also covers will-power and retaining sanity.
- Faith
- An innate ability to decide to believe something completely. To have faith. This helps in dealings with mist, in interactions or pleading with gods, or in lessening -- or strengthening -- the power of mist-born.
- Imagination
- An ability to think abstractly, to be creative, to 'make things up.' This is also helpful in dealing with mist.
Other
- Magic
- An ability to work with magic.
- Psionics
- Powers of the mind.
- MagicRes
- The ability to withstand or ignore or lessen the effects of magic.
- PsionicRes
- Same as above, but for mind-powers.
- Luck
- A natural luck. You have a higher chance of accomplishing things other people would fail at.
