Factions
In a world of chaos, people tend to band
together. Some of them for the good, some of them for their own
good. And some just because they ended up there. Factions and groups
make up many of the people you'll meet, or even play, during your time
here. Learn them well!
Knights of the Mist
In another realm, these warriors might have been
the police. In the disharmony and anarchy of the mists, however, they
are simply the strongest vigilantes. Well armed and well supported,
they have taken it upon themselves to provide their own definition of
law to the mists. While not actively supported by the Temple of
Nemesis, they call her their patron. Mist Knights are often seen
patrolling residential and learning centers in full battle regalia.
Anarchists
The core membership of the Anarchist faction are
peaceful activists, devoted to ending hierarchy, oppression,
profiteering, servitude, and all of the artificial authority that one
intelligent being might seek to hold over another. And then there are
those who have simply elected to call themselves anarchists. Usually
young and usually violent, they neither desire nor receive validation
from the true Anarchists, but have simply commandeered the term to
excuse their disregard for life and liberty. True Anarchists are often
seen in salons or on street corners, while the other variety are often
seen down dark alleys or within otherwise abandoned buildings.
The Jongleurs
The Jong strive to bring a little bit of color and
light to the blinding phosphorescence that is this realm, and succeed
with amazing consistency. Though many would think entertainers utterly
superfluous to life in the mists, these poets, musicians, and stage
performers somehow manage to come up with surprisingly touching works
again and again. Membership requires that a panel of noted minstrels
give their approval to one of the prospective bard's
compositions. Jong are often seen in parks, music halls, or taverns.
Magi
The Magi look to knowledge and manipulation of the
mists as the very answers to life and death. They are the wizards that
everyone will look towards when miraculous feats of research or magic
are required. Fiercely hierarchical, they maintain eight sacred
circles. Magi are usually inducted into the eighth circle by their
twelfth birthday, and are considered talented if they reach the third
circle before their deaths. A talent in politics, unsurprisingly, is
more important to a Magus than a talent in mist handling when it comes
to increasing his status. A good working knowledge of undetectable
poisons doesn't hurt, either. Magi are often seen studying ancient
tomes, battling ancient dragons, or floating face-down in ancient
rivers.
Paladins Of The Lyceum
The Paladins are peaceful sages, dedicated primarily
to preserving knowledge and history amid the fickle, volatile tides of
the mists. Applying diverse means to this end, it is not unusual to
see a Paladin committing a tome to memory while another copies it
meticulously by hand, and a third scans the finished pages onto an
optical crystal. Their secondary charge is to serve as teachers and
philosophers, and it is in this role that they are most widely
regarded. To have a Paladin as a personal tutor is an honor reserved
for only the most influential and powerful. Institutions of learning
that employ Paladins are almost universally esteemed. Paladins can be
found in the classroom, in musty libraries, and in the town square
surrounded by acolytes.
Latvis Or "Latrocinium Vispilio"
The Latvis believe that, in a realm where goods can
be produced out of the very air itself, no benefit can come of an
unhealthy obsession with ownership and property. They endeavor,
therefore, to provide relief to those unfortunates burdened by too
many material possessions. These interventions are usually performed
in the dead of night, and preferably while the beneficiary is out of
town. The Latvis tend to react poorly to anyone who would cut into
their intervention services, and even more poorly to anyone who would
dare make fun of their name. They are not seen, if they're any good.
